EXAMPLE QUESTION WALK-THROUGH

Last month we talked about identity. When you think about how you define yourself, what’s one area you’d like to change or improve?

  • I think of myself as a type A person, being type A I stress about preparing for every situation. I wish I wasn’t so caught up in planning the next and could focus on the now.

Why do you think you’ve struggled to improve in these areas?

  • I take comfort in being the well-planned friend. I feel put together when I’m the one that remembers to make the reservation and coordinate the plans. I like being thanked for being so on top of things.

How much comfort do you take in the “non-improved” version of yourself that exists today? Does this comfort make it difficult to want to actually improve?

  • I live in this in between space between wanting to live more in the moment and go with the flow and the peace of mind and gratitude I get from others when I’m the prepared friend. While I want to live more in the moment and go with the flow, I also don’t really want to let go of this.

What lies do you believe about yourself that make improving in this area hard for you?

  • If I don’t make the plans, they will never get made

  • People will like me less if I suddenly become someone who doesn’t keep everyone else organized

  • I will lose a part of me if I’m not the one stressed about keeping the trains running

How does hearing about the lies others believe about themselves make you feel?

  • Sad! We all expect things from others but we should be focused on our own wellbeing

Do you believe you deserve the improved version of this situation for yourself?

  • I believe I deserve a break sometimes

  • I believe if I let the ball drop then I won’t have as good of a time

What would you have to believe to allow yourself to improve in this area?

  • I’d have to believe that going with the flow, things will work out the way they are supposed to.

  • I’d have to believe that having a less tight hold on my every moment won’t result in my unhappiness and the disappointment of others in me
