WHAT TO DO IF YOUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP GOT CANCELLED

With the spread of COVID-19, internships and new jobs have come to a halt. Here at Holdette, we understand the frustration of having plans be canceled and want to help out those who feel lost, concerned, or a little less motivated. Here are a few things to do if your summer plans have been canceled:

  • If you’re still in school and not completely burnt out on remote learning, see if there are any cool summer electives you can take. Alternatively, try teaching yourself a new skill. YouTube is your oyster.

  • Find extracurriculars to look forward to. Sure, campus is shut down now, but what do you want to be part of when it reopens?

  • If there’s a place you’ve always wanted to volunteer, see if they’re looking for people.  Organizations might not be providing their usual services, but there might be special initiatives you can help with remotely.

  • Learn how to freelance. Depending on your industry, you might be able to pick up freelance work. It’s a good way to make cash without the binds of full-time or even part-time employment.

    • Some Industries that thrive off remote/freelance work:

      • Copywriting

      • Editorial / Op-Ed work

      • Graphic Design

      • Web and App Development

    • Here is a spreadsheet that we found with remote jobs to look into.

  • Take a break. We know, we know. If you’re Type A enough to read a post like this, that’s probably not what you were hoping to hear. Getting stopped in your tracks *sucks*, but sometimes all you can do is breathe. Get some sleep. Read Burnout. Remember the way you woke up when you were seven and a day was so much time. Drop your shoulders and breathe out. When you’re ready, gently open your eyes and look at the simple summer you’ve been given. It might do you good.

  • Here is another spreadsheet/resource that was shared with us detailing which companies are actively hiring and which have hiring freezes in place.

If you or your company is hiring and would like to share so please comment on this blog post or DM us on Instagram/Twitter
