BOOK CLUB IN REVIEW: JUNE

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

After being quarantined in March, I hadn’t participated in a group facilitated discussion outside of my family dinners in months. Being a part of the intimate, and thought provoking discussion we had in Back Pocket’s first book club this month- I remembered  what I had been missing.

I felt so nervous participating in an all online discussion. Would I get to share my thoughts? Would I get talked over? Would it be hard to hear from everyone?

The answer to all the above is yes, but also no. Everyone got to participate with the very expected bumps of “oopp my bad you go!” in between monologues that signaled the genuine desire of everyone there to hear each other’s opinions.

Hearing from other Back Pocket members about their feelings and reactions to Glennon Doyle’s work definitely enriched my own reading. Having finished the book I got to juxtapose my own feelings on the book with the interpretations of others. i I not only gained a greater appreciation for the book, but for the others in the group as well.

I got to step into these womxn’s shoes for a minute and it was lovely

We discussed every corner of the book from feminism, judgment of feminism(s), relationship communication, how we have built our boundaries as we have gotten older, our “knowing” (if you know, then you know *wink*), and so much more.

This discussion made me learn so much about myself, the community I am surrounding myself with, and the different perspectives of such strong womxn.

I’ve never participated in a book club before, but I’m hooked now and have already begun our fiction pick for July: The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett.
